About Redmond, WA

Redmond is a city in King County, Washington, United States of America, located approximately 15 miles (24 kilometers) east of Seattle. At the 2020 census, the population was 73,256, up from 54,144 in 2010. Redmond is best known as the American headquarters of Microsoft and Nintendo. Redmond is also regarded as the “Bicycle Capital of the Northwest” due to an annual bicycle race held on city streets and the state’s only velodrome.

Redmond is home to a slew of high-tech enterprises. Microsoft, which relocated its headquarters to Redmond in 1986, is by far the city’s largest employment. Microsoft employs over 40,000 blue badge FTEs (full-time equivalents), 45,000 orange badge contractors (as of June 2012, the company employed over 94,000 people, with more than half being contractors), and occupies more than 8 million square feet (750,000 square meters) of office space in the Seattle area’s Eastside region, primarily in Redmond, with additional offices in Bellevue and Issaquah (90,000 employees worldwide). Microsoft paid $220.5 million in June 2006 for the former Safeco Redmond facility located at 4515–5069 154th Place NE.

Nintendo of America, Genie Industries (now part of Terex), Physio-Control (now part of Stryker), Visible.net, WildTangent, Solstice (bought by Samsung), and Data I/O are all headquartered in Redmond.

SpaceX and Hyperloop Genesis announced the establishment of a facility in Redmond in 2015. Their primary focus will be on research and development of a projected internet communications satellite constellation and novel modes of travel.

Unlike Bellevue and other adjacent cities, Redmond does not have an income tax on businesses and occupations. However, in 1996, a business licensing charge of $55 per employee was established to help offset the costs of road improvements for businesses. The charge is $107 per employee as of 2016.
