Skykomish is a community located in King County, Washington. As of the 2010 census, the population was 198, down from an estimated peak of “several thousand” in the 1920s. Skykomish was built as a railroad town in the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, 49 miles east of Everett, Washington, on the South Fork of the Skykomish River. Today, it serves primarily as a gateway to the surrounding mountains, especially skiing at neighboring Stevens Pass.
Due to its location in the far northeastern part of King County, Skykomish is cut off from the rest of the county by mountains. Rather than that, US Highway 2 (locally referred to as the Cascade Highway) connects it to Snohomish County to the north and to Chelan County via Stevens Pass (17 miles east of town).
As of the 2010 census, the town had a population of 198 people, 95 homes, and 45 families. There were 638.7 persons per square mile (246.6 inhabitants per km2). There were 168 dwelling units at an average density of 541.9 dwelling units per square mile (209.2 dwelling units per km2). The town’s racial composition was 95.5 percent White, 1.0 percent African American, 1.5 percent Native American, 1.5 percent Asian, and 0.5 percent of residents who identified as belonging to two or more races. Latino or Hispanic people of any race made up 1.5 percent of the population. (Source: Wikipedia)
