About Kenmore, WA

Kenmore is a city in King County, Washington, United States, located on the lake’s northernmost shore. It is a suburb located at the mouth of the Sammamish River, roughly 12 miles (19 kilometers) northeast of downtown Seattle and 2 miles (3.2 kilometers) west of Bothell. At the 2010 census, the city had a population of 20,460. Kenmore is also home to the Kenmore Air Harbor, the country’s largest seaplane-only passenger facility.

State Route 522 and the Burke-Gilman Trail, which both run east-west along the lakeshore, connect the city to adjacent locations. The city borders extend north to the Snohomish County line and south to the Kirkland/Saint Edward State Park/Bastyr University border. The dahlia is the city’s official flower, the great blue heron is the city’s official bird, and the rhododendron is the city’s official evergreen.

Economy

While Kenmore has mostly become a bedroom community for employees commuting to nearby Seattle, Bothell, and Redmond, it has a sizable independent economic core concentrated on durable goods (building materials, concrete, and asphalt) and special trade contracting (construction, heavy construction, and highways).

At the mouth of the Sammamish River, Kenmore is also home to one of the remaining industrial ports on Lake Washington. Several larger local businesses are located near the port, including Rinker Materials’ Kenmore facility, Kenmore Ready-Mix (blocks of cement and asphalts, a division of Glacier Northwest), Pacific Topsoils (topsoils and landscape construction materials), Michael Homchick Stoneworks (stone fabrication and installation), and Plywood Supply (lumber, plywood, and millwork, wholesale, retail, and company headquarters). The city is also an auction center because it is home to the James G. Murphy Company, one of the ten largest commercial/industrial auction houses in the United States.

Significant non-durable-goods enterprises include the headquarters of Kenmore Air, a prominent private seaplane airline; the company headquarters and processing factory of Alaska General Seafoods; and Bastyr University, a naturopathic medical school. (Source: Wikipedia)
